The Statistics (source: Cleve Cheney):
Hunters are intent on locating animals to hunt. They are generally prepared for only one day and are often ill prepared for inclement weather. Hunters tend to be over confident and over estimate their abilities.
33% have good experience and the remainder have limited experience. More than 80% have no survival training.
40% wear adequate clothing, 40% questionable clothing and 20% inadequate clothing for cold weather.
Hunters tend to move off the beaten track, which makes them more difficult to find if lost. They will generally attempt to find paths, trails or drainage lines when lost.
Reasons for hunters becoming lost include:
- Concentrating on finding animals and don’t pay attention to surroundings
- Hunters often extend themselves physically or lose track of time and are overtaken by darkness (33%)
- Move into dense bush or rugged terrain away from civilization
- Often try taking shortcuts
- Unprepared for bad weather (18%)
- Hunting in unfamiliar areas
- Poor navigational skills
- Injuries / trauma
