Press Release - Canned bow hunt condemned by CHASA

26-Apr-2013

25 April 2013

In a statement this morning, CHASA condemned the practice of so called, canned hunting, as depicted in the You-tube video that recently appeared on the Internet under the name of “Lion Hunt with Bow”.

From the video it is clear that the animal was hunted from a vehicle in a small enclosure. The young animal was clearly accustomed to human contact and appeared to be in a playful and unafraid state. CHASA condemns the actions of the bow hunter and any other involved parties in the strongest possible terms and reaffirms our stance that true hunting should be conducted in congruence with our long standing policy on fair chase where the wild quarry is offered a reasonable chance of escape. Fair Chase is further defined as the pursuit of a free ranging animal or enclosed ranging animal possessed of the natural and behavioural inclination to escape from the hunter and be fully free to do so. A recreationally hunted animal should exist as a naturally interacting individual of a wild sustainable population, located in an area that meets both the spatial (territory and home range) and temporal (food, breeding and basic needs) requirements of the population of which that individual is a member. Conducting this “canned” hunt from the safety of a vehicle, is to our mind cowardly and cannot be condoned. Actions as depicted in this video, is in direct contradiction of our code of conduct.

CHASA will seek to identify the person/s involved and should they appear to be in any way affiliated to our organisation, a full investigation with the view to proceeding with appropriate disciplinary steps will follow.

Persverklaring

CHASA veroordeel geblikte boogjag
